Tillman County Sheriff Bobby Whittington reports his office has received multiple calls in reference to a telephone scam which is sweeping across Southwest Oklahoma.
The caller identifies himself as the Sheriff of Tillman County. He then states the person has missed an important court date, and to avoid arrest, must pay $500. The caller then explains the person must purchase a money card and send it to a specific address.
Sherriff Whittington requests anyone receiving a call similar to this ascertain as much information as possible from the caller. Important details to note include: voice, male or female, accent, specific terminology used, background noises and caller ID for the phone number.
Sheriff Whittington requests citizens contact the sheriff’s department at 580-335-3013 immediately if they receive one of these calls.
Sheriff Whittington states his office will never contact a person by phone if he has a warrant for an arrest.
